FAQs

Where do we meet at Tempe Town Lake?

We meet at Tempe Town Lake Marina (550 E Tempe Town Lake, Tempe, AZ 85281), near the boat docks. Look for the Phoenix Heat team paddlers in orange/black gear — you won’t miss us (but if you do, just ask for Ed, Dorra, or Justin from any dragon boater)! Arrive 15 minutes early so we can get you checked in and ready to paddle.

How long are practices?

On-water dragon boat practices last about 90 minutes and include technique drills and race pieces, while incorporating elements of interval, endurance, and power training. All Meetup practices are held in a dragon boat.

What should I bring with me?

  1. Comfortable athletic clothing that can get wet (quick-dry preferred).

  2. Flip-flops or water shoes for getting on/off the dock.

  3. Sun protection: Hat, sunglasses with a strap, and sunscreen.

  4. A positive attitude and willingness to try something new!

  5. Water!!

Are paddles and life jackets provided?

Yes! We provide paddles and PFDs (life jackets) for all first-time paddlers and new members. You’re welcome to bring your own gear if you’d like. Just keep in mind that PFDs are required.

Do I need to bring water?

Absolutely. Hydration is key for paddling in Arizona’s heat. Bring a full reusable water bottle (or two). We take breaks on the water, and you’ll be glad you have it.

WHo will I meet at practice?

Your first practice is a great chance to meet the coaches, captains, and teammates. Our experienced paddlers love welcoming new members and showing you the ropes. Don’t worry if you’ve never paddled before — we’ll teach you everything you need to know!

How do I decide if I’d like to join?

Your first month of practice is free and a no-pressure way to see if paddling is for you. Afterward, we’ll share details about joining the club, training schedules, and upcoming races. Most people are hooked after their first time on the water!

Do I need to sign a waiver?

Yes! Please sign the Arizona Dragon Boat Association Waiver Guest Waiver before you arrive at practice.
